Today is the fourth of July and today we celebrate our Independence as a country. But one thing that is sobering is to understand that our Freedom has never been, nor will it ever be free. People have bled and died, so that you and I can have the freedoms to live in a free country. For me, there are two things I celebrate on July 4th. Those who have died and served fighting for and defending our country; and those who are currently fighting, serving and defending our country.
How much more should we celebrate the sacrifice of Jesus today?
Call it irony or providence that the Fourth of July fell on the same say that we read John 3. With the most famous verse in the Bible. John 3:16.
Jesus gave up his life, voluntarily, so that we can have freedom from death. He died so that we can have freedom from sin. Because he loves us.
But the reality that also stands is that there has to be a current defending of that freedom. And we read about that in John 3:21.
"But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God"
There is some work involved here on our part. Christ died so that we could be free from sin and death, but we also have to live in the truth. We have to live in a pursuit of truth, and truth defends.
Today on the Fourth of July here are a few application questions for you:
- How much time do you spend defending your freedom from the enemy, Satan?
- Are you in a pursuit of Christ?
- Spend a few minutes reveling in the fact that Christ died for you. God died for you. Does your life reflect it?
